GLK’s sleep under the stars for Porchlight

Plans are underway for GLK’s sleepout for the homeless charity Porchlight on 15 March 2024. To raise awareness of the Stepping Stones project, which our fundraiser will be supporting, Porchlight have produced a video for us, which is on our YouTube channel, and can be viewed by clicking here. Please share the link to the video as widely as you can. Just Giving pages will be set up very soon to collect donations. Units who are not able to take part in the sleepover, we encourage you to still do your bit by raising some money for this worthwhile charity.

Bromley North Trefoil “All Sing Together”

“All Sing Together” in the Garden Room at St Augustine’s Church, Southborough Lane BR2 8AT (on the 208 bus route).

Saturday 14^th October from 10.00am -11.00am. As part of the Girlguiding Greater London Kent county “24-hour sing” there will be on opportunity for any adult current or ex girlguiding members to join Fran Chittock and Bromley North Trefoil to sing your favourite campfire songs.

Please do come along, the more the merrier! ~ why not give your old Campfire blanket an airing and bring it along, moths welcome! #GLKAllSingTogether

International Opportunity for Guides, Rangers & Young Leaders in GLK

GLK is really pleased to be able to offer Guides, Rangers and Young Leaders in our county the opportunity to take part in Breakaway to Belgium, LaSER Region’s Oct 2023 half-term adventure.

International trips bring the opportunity for meeting new people, developing independence and travel skills and creating memories and we hope this trip will provide that for any young people who are up for the adventure.

The event will be a long weekend and involve the young people exploring the city of Brussels, whilst taking part in a wide game with lots of other groups from across the region.

Open to GLK Guides (who will in year 8 or above from Sept 23), Rangers and Young Leaders please email guidingglk@yahoo.co.uk for an application form.

Applications close on 31^st March and it will depend on numbers whether we need to select those who are offered a place to attend.

5 year old Olivia Matthews was enrolled as a member of Blackfen Rainbow Unit on Tuesday 12^th October by her mother Louise Matthews who is leader in charge of the unit.

Roll back 32 years and it was 5 year old Louise herself who was enrolled by her own mother Alison Hope, who had just formed the unit and taken in her first ten 5 year old girls. Now, 32 years later Alison was able to take part in the Promise evening of her granddaughter.

Louise, who is also Commissioner for Lamorbey District, said: “It was a lovely moment to have my mum there to see me enrol Olivia at the exact same spot that I made my promise when my mum took in her first intake of Rainbows after starting the unit all those years ago.”

Alison said: “It was a very emotional and proud moment to see Olivia make her promise to her Mummy just as her Mummy had done to me when she was five. I am still involved and enjoy Guiding and am happy to be called upon from time to time to help out other units.”

Jubilee Virtual Reality Beacon Trail – Danson Park

We are delighted to let you know that GLK, in partnership with Bexley Council, have arranged to have a virtual reality beacon trail installed in Danson Park. It will be running until the 12th June 2022.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon Trail is located at seven stops around the park, it is positioned so that families can enjoy all parts of the park. Families will be guided on their trip by Sir Barnaby Beacon as he visits seven memorable and magical friends, like Charlie Crown or Theadora Throne, who have come to life from Buckingham Palace and gone on a trip to see Bexleyheath. The characters also come alive through augmented reality so you can snap a selfie with them as you go around!

The trail takes about forty-five minutes to complete but can be completed in more than one visit. It’s completely free for families and groups to take part in and they win a free, digital fun pack at the end.

Mayor of Bexley joins Blackfen Rainbows for Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

In the last few weeks members from across Girlguiding Greater London Kent County have been taking part in some wonderful Jubilee Celebrations.

Tuesday 24th May saw Blackfen Rainbows celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a Street Party attended by all members, families and Leaders, past and present. The celebration was also attended by Cllr James Hunt who visited the unit as one of his very last events as the Mayor of Bexley. Cllr Hunt said, “It has been such a lovely event and the girls had a great time. The decorations were great!”

Rainbow Leader and Lamorbey District Commissioner Louise Matthews explained, “The Rainbows were able to tell the Mayor lots about what they had been doing at Rainbows in the weeks leading up to their fantastic celebration and we’re very excited to meet him, especially as it was one of his last events as his term of office ended the next day.”

All the girls were presented with commemorative badges and balloons and the Leaders arranged for mugs to be made for each girl to remember the historic event.

Hearing Dog gives Bromley Young Leader the confidence to pursue girlguiding opportunites

Amelia, a Ranger and Young Leader with 12th Bromley Brownies, has spent the Easter weekend brushing the cobwebs off the bunting ready for the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations, helped by her Hearing Dog, Scamp.

Diagnosed as severe to profoundly deaf at the age of 4, Amelia struggled with friendships and felt very lonely. However on starting Brownies, she was made to feel very welcome, and Amelia’s guiding journey begun. Amelia enjoyed Brownies so much that she happily progressed onto Guides.

At the age of 13, Amelia received Hearing Dog, Scamp, and he really changed her life. Scamp, gave Amelia the confidence to pursue the opportunities girlguiding offered her. With Scamp by her side, and encouragement from her local District, Amelia has moved onto Rangers and become a Young Leader. She completed the Young Leader Qualification, and has almost completed the Adult Leadership Qualification. She has completed her Bronze DofE and has now started her Gold DofE. Amelia has passed her British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1, and is now working towards her Level 2.

Amelia also finds time to fundraise for the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, so that other people can have a life changing Hearing Dog like Scamp.

For GLK Young Leaders to attend with a Leader from their unit

We will be looking at how unit teams can work together to support Young Leaders and how units can benefit from having a Young Leader. It will also be a chance for Young Leaders to meet face to face with other Young Leaders from across the County.
